New Pride and Prejudice

So for the past few weeks, I have been falling in love with Pride and Prejudice all over again. This time, because of The Lizzie Bennett Diaries, a modern adaptation for social media. It is the brain child of Hank Green, of the vlogbrothers, DFTBA records, VidCon, and ALL the other jobs; and Bernie Su, who created and wrote the web series Compulsions.

The story is told mainly from Lizzie’s perspective (and from her bedroom). In this version, she is a 24 year-old grad student in mass communications, creating this vlog with her friend Charlotte, a fellow grad student studying film. Her sisters Jane and Lydia (no Mary or Kitty in this version) drop into her room every so often, so we get to see their perspectives as well. The rest of the characters, we have met so far only as impersonations done by the four girls (Jane’s impersonation of Darcy is, by far, my favourite).

There are two 3-5 minute episodes a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, but the story continues behind the scenes throughout the week, because each of characters (even the ones we haven’t met yet), are on twitter, facebook, tumblr, google+, and post throughout the week, interacting with each other, and with the general public.

Now, obviously, being a modern adaptation of a classic, they cannot be absolutely faithful to the book, but it has been fascinating to watch how they bring the story into the 21st century, and to read Bernie Su’s blog posts on the subject. And there hasn’t been an episode yet (there are 19 as of this post) that hasn’t made me laugh aloud at least once. The vlog lives here.

In audiobook news, I have two new books coming out on Audible. Links upcoming, once they go live.

    Hi, Karen,

Just thinking of you when I saw a tweet from @savages promoting the film premiering on July 6th. And thanks for the tip on the new contemporary “Pride and Prejudice,” one of my all-time favorites — your reading being right at the top.

    Hi Karen,

Your reading of Pride and Prejudice is absolutely one of my favourite things on earth! I’ve listened to it over and over and I must admit your voice has become a sort of fascination for me. Persuasion is absolutely my favourite Austen novel and I have just fallen in love with The Secret Garden again after listening to your narration.

Imagine my surprise when I started listening to Anne of Green Gables and discovered your an Amercian! I would never have guessed, your accents are so lovely. Finding your blog here and discovering you are still recording has made me a pretty happy lady this morning. Can I ask, are your books now only available through the Audibles app? Ive been listening up until now always on Audiobooks. Either way I look forward to listening to this new Lizzie Bennet Diaries, I love all things Austen. I just watched a movie adaptation of Persuasion with Anthony Head in it that was wonderful! Anyway, I hope you are well and thanks again for all the hours of enjoyment! Kind Regards, Pirelle of Perth, Australia

  3. Hi Pirelle, all the books I’ve recorded for LibriVox can be found on their catalog page: https://catalog.librivox.org/visitor_advanced.php
You can enter my name under reader, and choose solo from the Group/Solo dropdown menu to find all the books I’ve read for them by myself.
Most of the books I’ve been paid to record can be found on Audible, Amazon and in the iTunes store.

Thanks heaps. I’ve finally figured out how to make Audible work and have signed up and bought some credits so I should be good to go from there. Just need to work out how to get the LibriVox ones to work on my iphone now. I’m sure I’ll work it out and be listening to Sense and Sensibility before the day is out.

Thanks for your response. Have a great day!

Listening now! Yay! That was easy 🙂

  6. The easiest way to get LV audiobooks on an apple device is to use the “Subscribe in iTunes” option. You’ll find it in the mass of links just below the description. If you click on it, you should get a pop-up asking if it’s ok to open this in itunes. Click ok and it will start downloading the first file in the podcasts area. You can then download the rest from there (there should be a “Get all” option, so you don’t have to click each one individually). Then you can just sync them to your iphone.
